Cucao Chardonnay, 2003, Casablanca Valley.

* * ½     6 vots

Casablanca Valley, Chile.
Available from 8 Euros.
wines Casablanca valleyA good value (ie cheap) aperitif was required; but a wine with some weight that could continue to be drunk through the first couple of courses. A bottle of Chilean Chard was grabbed from the shelf.

The aroma is quite oaky (butterscotch) but it transforms into just a splash on the palate. Tropical fruits add an exotic edge to the citrusy palate. Drinkable, (which I find is highly desirable in a wine!), and pleasing. The grapes for this are in the process of being classified as organic chilean wine.

Chilean ChardonnayIn October the weather begins to heat up, and with the heat this is the best time to try Misiones de Rengo Chilean ChardonnayChardonnay white wines which are served chilled. A wide range of offers can be found of reserve white wines at a very affordable price.

It pays to keep a look out since real bargains can be found in young wines which have not been stored in oak barrels. Ideally buy 2007 wines, or 2006 at the most.

This Misiones de Rengo Chardonnay Reserve 2006 is a very good wine, above all on the palate, with pleasant tropical fruit notes.

Marques Casa Concha Chardonnay 2002. Maipo Valley.

* * *     5 vots

Maipo Valley Marques Casa Concha ChardonnayThis Chilean Chardonnay of Concha y Toro Vineyard is a nice example of a spicy Chardonnay, with oak and butter notes well restained, and with plenty of fruit ranging from pear to more tropical notes.

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, really liked this wine in his 4-19-04 review. He said: “91 Points. Bold, with lots of spice and toast notes laying over ripe pear tartine, fig and mango flavors. The fruit stays lush on the finish, while a stony underpinning keeps it all honest. Drink now through 2005. 11,000 cases made. Smart Buys.”Judging from today’s tasting, the 2002 is still drinking quite well.

At $13.99 (Nashville Price), this is one to include in a mix case of Chardonnay.

Update 2-23-05: Wine Spectator just rated the 2003 vintage 90 points (March 31, 2005 issue).

WineMaker comments
The grapes for this Chardonnay have been grown in a exceptional vineyards of Casablanca Valley. The climate is strongly influencied by fresh breezes of the Pacific Ocen, which allow a slow ripening period which is the main factor to obtain intense and complex fruit character. Whith a bright yellow colour, this is a crisp, fruity and well-balanced Chardonnay with a good acidity; citrus and pineaple flavours with a long finish.
